PAWS for Reading!

August 10, 2017 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

PAWS offers elementary school children the opportunity to practice their reading skills by reading aloud to a trained therapy dog. A dog is a loving and attentive audience — another fun reason to visit the Library! Children are empowered to become the teachers, learning vocabulary and comprehension as they explain a story to a new canine friend. Our methods are based on those pioneered by the National R.E.A.D. Program (Reading Education Assistance Dogs) http://www.therapyanimals.org/R.E.A.D.html)

The dog handlers are available for 1 ½ hours on the dates below. During this allotted time, we’re glad to offer three spaces, one child per 20 minute session. He or she will get lots of attention, working one-on-one with the dog and handler. You can bring a book from home or ask a librarian to choose an appropriate book for your child’s skill level and interest.

  • Thu, Aug 10 & Tue, Aug 15 with Cindy Fisher (handler) & Strider, a Golden Retriever
