Staff Picks: We Were Liars and Family of Liars by E. Lockhart

A wealthy family, a private island, unreliable narrators, and secrets, secrets, secrets! The perfect summer read.

The Sinclair family has summered on their private island off the coast of Massachusetts for generations. The cousins swim, eat, and adventure in what used to seem like paradise. But this summer, everything is different.  Ever since Cady’s accident two years ago, she has suffered from migraines, illness, and memory loss.  Now she returns to the island after a long absence, determined to rekindle the relationship with her cousins and recover her memory of what really happened.

We Were Liars is written in dreamy, poetic prose, exploring one girl’s confrontation with reality; not only the truth about her accident, but the truth about her family, her first love, and her whole insular world.  Family of Liars is the prequel to We Were Liars and tells the story of Cady’s aunts when they were teenagers.  It is just as juicy and full of secrets, but read it after We Were Liars because it does contain spoilers- and you don’t want to ruin any of the twists and turns of these family dramas.
