In the summer of 1979, during “the troubles” in Ireland, two men arrive on a remote island off the coast of Ireland. One man, an artist, to paint the beautiful, wild cliffs. The other, a linguist, to record and write about the language of the island residents which is spoken by fewer and fewer people. The story evolves around the islanders and their relationships with the off-islanders, not all of it successful or wanted.
I liked the style of the author and would recommend the book, though be warned, it is not a happy beach read.
