Maine Children’s Book Awards:

  • The Chickadee Award
The Chickadee Award is a Maine children’s choice book project for children in kindergarten through fourth grade and is named after Maine’s state bird. It is intended to complement the Maine Student Book Award program that involves students in grades four through eight. Our goal is for students to develop an appreciation of outstanding writing and illustrations in current children’s picture books by participating in this program. We hope they will become discriminating readers by voting for their favorite book. A curriculum guide that includes activities, complimentary books, author & illustrator biographical sketches is available.
  • Katahdin Award
The Katahdin Award is a lifetime achievement award given by the Youth Services Section of the Maine State Library to recognize an outstanding body of work of children’s literature of Maine by one author or illustrator.
  • Lupine Award
The Lupine Award is designed to honor a living author or illustrator who is a resident of Maine, or who has created a work whose focus is Maine, as shown through the work’s characterization, plot or setting.
  • The Maine Student Book Award
The Maine Student Book Award is given annually to a book selected by Maine students in grades four through eight as their favorite book of the year. An annotated reading list of outstanding fiction and non-fiction titles is provided to all students and these books are made available to borrow at School and public libraries. The Maine Student Book Award is a project of the Maine Library Association and Maine Association of School Librarians.
