Trudy Callaghan, originally from County Meath in Ireland, now lives in Deering Center, Portland. She draws upon a rich tradition of Irish and Scottish songs, as well as English broadside ballads. It’s a unique mix – from sweet melodies to strong narratives. A brief description before each song helps anchor it in time and place, while the songs themselves open up a window onto times past – from love songs to songs of trades long gone – ploughmen, shoemakers, blacksmiths – to wistful songs of immigration, to the poems of W.B. Yeats set to music. Trudy also sings a cappella songs in Gaelic, drawing from songs and poems all Irish children learned in school. She accompanies herself on acoustic guitar. The free concert is sponsored by Just Framing.
